Oak Tree Stairway
In Tasting Room/Cafe
Every business should have something Extraordinary that wows, sparks interest and memorable conversation.
For SkyLand it is this massive White Oak Tree, with a spiral staircase built into and a little sky-bridge connecting to the second floor of the Art Barn. I felt that giving customers something to talk about, would create Word-Of-Mouth free advertising. And so it has! The tree with its ingenious staircase is a huge draw and creates nonstop delight, fascination and excitement. It has been photographed and shared thousands of times.
Store Layout: There is a standard staircase towards the front of the store, leading to the second floor. And then the Tree Stairway, at the opposite end, in the Cafe/Tasting room. This creates a seamless, circular flow for being able to comfortably explore & shop the second floor. Accessing the Second Floor is either via the Tree Staircase,(a fun and adventurous experience for those wishing to "climb through a tree"), or via a conventional, standard staircase for the more standard folks.
Specs: The Tree appears to be growing through the floor. However, the "tree" is actually only one trunk of a large White Oak from the property. (The actual tree, is still thriving in the 30 acres of woods on the property.) After the one fork of the tree was carefully removed, I had a crane carefully cradled this trunk down from the woodlot, down the hill and set it into place onto four giant 6x6 posts (with plywood flooring sandwiched between the posts and the base of the tree trunk.) The Northern portion, or the tasting/cafe area, was then built around the tree, to give the appearance as if the tree had always been there.
